It is the most compact and short-tailed of the European washerwomen. It has a dark back, folded wings with grey feathers, and very white underparts. The breeding ground for the common sandpiper is subtropical Europe but it migrates to Australia and Africa during the winter season. One of the distinctive qualities of the Green Sandpiper lies in its habit of bobbing tail when it gets nervous.
